It sounds like the laser on the drive may have failed, sadly the only way to get this resolved is to replace the faulty drive in question.
Is your unit still within warranty?

Apologies for the delay.
It's a bit difficult to give an estimate at the moment. We may have to swap both drives on your current unit if they are not the same model as my replacement, as this could cause more problems further down the line.
The cost per drive is £37.85 + VAT (which includes MFDigital firmware, pre-flashed)
I can estimate approximately 3 hours labour (at £50 + VAT per hour) pending no further issues.
As for the possibility of upgrading the units, I could only really tell by looking at the unit when I arrive.
